(CNN) — The death toll in the attack on a school in western Uganda has risen to 41, Mpondwe Town Mayor Mapoze Slevest said on Saturday.
Mayor Bilal Katamba, portavoz de las operations militares de Uganda en la República Democrática del Congo (RDC), declared earlier that between 20 and 25 rebels attacked the secundaria school of Lhubirira, in Mpondwe, between 11.00 pm and the medianoche del Friday.
“The situation is not good,” he said. “We are here with the security forces, the UPDF (Uganda People’s Defense Force) and the police. They are cleaning up, investigating and finding out what to do next. It was a good community, no rebels,” Slevest said. . .
The school is located on Uganda’s border with Congo.
The army is pursuing the suspects in the DRC and believes they are heading for Virunga National Park.
Armed rebels from the Islamic State-linked ADF attacked Mpondwe’s school on Friday evening, police said.
“A dormitory was set on fire and a food warehouse looted,” Ugandan police spokesman Fred Enanga said on Twitter, adding that the bodies had been taken to Bwera Hospital.
