Lionel Messi and MLS club Inter Miami are negotiating a possible transfer, according to reports

(Spanish CNN) — Lionel Messi and Major League Soccer (MLS) Inter Miami are in talks to sign the seven-time best player in the world for MLS, according to Guillem Balague, football journalist for BBC and The Athletic.

CNN has contacted Major League Soccer, Inter Miami, Messi’s manager and David Beckham, who is part of the team that owns Inter Miami.

After the relationship with PSG broke down and he ended up leaving the team at the end of the current season, there has been speculation about various destinations the Argentine could reach, from a return dream in Barcelona to a transfer to an Arab club Arabia.

However, everything seems to indicate that the bid will be won by Inter Miami, a team currently in last place in its MLS conference, with only 15 points in 16 games played.

Some reports had already linked Messi with a potential move to Inter Miami, which is owned by David Beckham.

Beckham is a well-known admirer of Messi and in 2019 joked: ‘You never know what can happen in football’ when asked about the possibility of signing the Argentine one day.

More serious ties have since emerged, with Britain’s The Times newspaper reporting in November 2022 that a deal between the two sides was close. However, at the time, Messi’s agent Marcelo Mendez said the Argentine was not in negotiations to join Inter Miami next season, calling the news ‘fake news’.

When could Messi arrive at Inter Miami?

Although there is no clear arrival date, Lionel Messi’s contract with PSG officially ends on June 30, so his arrival at Inter Miami, or any other club, must take place at from July 1.

Moreover, despite the fact that he no longer has any matches with PSG, he will have commitments at national team level at the end of June.

With Argentina, he will play two friendlies. One of them against Australia – the team he beat in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar – on June 15 in Beijing, with a time to be confirmed. The other engagement will take place on June 19 against Indonesia, in Jakarta, also with a deadline to be defined.

The Latin teammates Messi would have at Inter Miami

Unlike PSG, where he had few Latin American teammates, at Inter Miami there are several players from different parts of Latin America, from his native Argentina to Mexico.

And not only the players, but also the club’s interim coach is also Latino.

Here are the Latin teammates Messi would have at Inter Miami:

Hay otros jugadores en el equipo que tienen raíces latinas y también la nacionalidad estadounidense, tales como Víctor Ulloa (México/Estados Unidos), Edison Azcona (República Dominicana/Estados Unidos), David Ruíz (Honduras/Estados Unidos) y Felipe Valencia (Colombia /UNITED STATES).
