(CNN) — Hawaiian professional surfer Mikala Jones has died aged 44 after a surfing accident in Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands, Surfline reported on Monday citing official reports.
The exact details surrounding his death are unclear.
Jones’ daughter Isabella wrote on Instagram after her father’s death that she was “so in disbelief” and explained that “her father had a serious surfing accident and did not survive”.
She paid tribute to her father, sharing photos of her and her father from their childhood, writing, “I wish you were still here with us, you weren’t supposed to leave yet. It’s too much early.”
Following Jones’ death, many members of the surfing community took to social media to pay their respects.
Surf photographer Brian Bielmann shared a photo of Jones on Instagram and wrote, “our friend Mikala Jones passed away yesterday at [las islas] Mentawai riding the waves he loved… I am so sorry and send prayers to his family.
Legendary pro surfer Kelly Slater, who has 11 World Surfing Championship titles under her belt, also commented on Bielmann’s post, writing: “Sobering moment; perhaps no one has lived this life better. Awesome guy and surfer.”
Surfing legend Mick Fanning, who has won three world titles, also shared a photo of him and Jones on Instagram, writing: “So sorry to hear the news. Mikala, you were one of a kind.”
The Mentawai Islands, in the West Sumatra province of Indonesia, are renowned for having one of the best surf spots in the world.
CNN has contacted the Indonesian National Police, USA Surfing and the International Surfing Association for comment.
