(Spanish CNN) — The Gold Cup, the main tournament for the men’s national teams of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Football (Concacaf), begins its 2023 edition.

The preliminary phases of the tournament have taken place (which grant the last three places in the competition, obtained by Guadeloupe, Martinique and Saint-Kitts-et-Nevis), while the group stage has its start this Saturday, June 24 with the inaugural match between the United States and Jamaica.

2023 will be the 17th edition of the Gold Cup, a football competition which takes place every two years and was first played in 1991.

Of the 16 editions already played, Mexico is the big winner of the tournament, with 8 championships to its credit, according to Concacaf data.

The United States are closely following Mexico, as the “Stars and Stripes” team has won 7 Gold Cup titles.

Canada is the team that completes the list of Gold Cup winners with its only championship won in 2000 against Colombia.
